KSHV and Kaposi's Sarcoma: the end of the beginning?
Article Abstract:
Yuan Chang and colleagues have determined the seminal identification of the genome of a novel human herpesvirus in Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) specimens in 1994. The discovery has sparked diverging opinions on the role of the agent in the etiology of the tumor. Thus, it has also facilitated both clinical and laboratory researches which agree on the common hypothesis that the KS-associated herpesvirus has a critical role to play in the development of this neoplasm. A summary of the evidence, which links virus and disease, and the molecular mechanisms underlying this association is presented.
