Article Abstract:

Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research, Aberystwyth, Wales, Head of Chemistry Dr Robert Nash has been researching British plants to try to find new chemical compounds. New types of equipment allows Nash and his team to fully investigate the plants. Dr Nash also works for a commercial company, Molecular Nature Ltd. He points out it can be also as difficult to obtain new equipment in the commercial firm as at the Institute. He also suggests working for a company increases the need to find results. Dr Nash is reexamining compounds in herbal remedies, such as dandelions.

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the funding of science research in South Africa are discussed. All scientific research must have a social or commercial use. Some observers point out South Africa needs to invest in research along with creating a jobs and houses for the black population.

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that economic and social disadvantage have a greater impact than family structure on the behaviour, literacy and numeracy of children aged five to sixteen. Issues concerning the psychology of young children in single-parent families are discussed.
