The suspect Romeo

Article Abstract:

Timothy Garton-Ash first traveled to Berlin, Germany, in 1978 and became involved in writing about East Germany. He has since married a woman from East Germany and has been involved in key events in eastern Europe. He discovered secret police files on him compiled by the German Stasi. The discovery has left him with scepticism about interpretation since it is difficult for him to reconstruct his life as depicted in the files. He also sees fathers as important since the informers providing information on him tended to have lost their fathers.

Bred in the bone

Article Abstract:

Paleontologist Louise Leakey has followed her well-renowned family into the field of paleontology but claims she would like to make an impression in her own right. She does not want to be competitive but feels she would like to continue with important research. Discoveries made by Louise's parents, Richard and Meave Leakey, have changed modern thinking on human evolution, while her grandfather Louis Leakey provided evidence which suggests that man is much older than previously believed.

FE calls for more subdegrees

Article Abstract:

The UK Further Education Funding Council (FEFC) has called for more two-year subdegree courses and a redefining of post-statutory educational levels in its submission to Sir Ron Dearing's inquiry into higher education. This is similar to submissions from the Department for Education and Employment and from a team looking into the education system of East Coast America. The FEFC would also like to see easier progression for students between different institutions.
