Transatlantic cash gulf grows

Article Abstract:

The pitiful size of the endowment funds enjoyed by universities in the United Kingdom when compared with those of their US counterparts has been exposed by a new report released by The Sutton Trust. The research reveals that even the two best endowed universities in the UK, Oxford and Cambridge, with total endowment worth an estimated UKPd2 bil each, would only come in 15th on a league table of US institutions. The next nearest UK university is Edinburgh, with endowments of UKPd160 mil in 2001-2002, which would place it 150th on the US list. The leading US university in 2001-2002 was Harvard, with endowments worth UKPd10.7 bil, followed by Yale with UKPd6.6 bil and the University of Texas with UKPd5.4 bil.
