Hitachi Maxell plans to jump-start growth with unique batteries

Article Abstract:

Hitachi Maxell Ltd has developed a leak-proof gel polymer lithium ion battery, called the PLS3089116, in the fall of 1999. The product is one of the thinnest models and provides one of the largest capacities in its class. It incorporates a three-dimensional gel polymer instead of the liquid electrolyte of conventional lithium ion batteries. PLS3089116 serves as a springboard for further development at Hitachi Maxell which plans to release a compact version commercially for use in mobile phones by mid-year 2000.

Hitachi Maxell harnesses battery technology, production knowhow

Article Abstract:

Hitachi Maxell Ltd borrows heavily from the key manufacturing technologies employed in its other products to produce lithium ion batteries and polymer lithium ion batteries. The electrodes for the batteries are manufactured using the same technology for the manufacture of videotape, audiotape and other magnetic recording media. The manufacturing technologies employed in the production of integrated circuit cards and other electronic media are used for both battgeries and battery packs.
