Digital still camera manufacturers are developing new products in response to the increasing demand for digital cameras. The growing popularity of this product category stems from various features offered by digital technology. These include allowing users to view images shortly after shooting, printing out images or sending them by electronic mail, as well as enabling users to do image processing by themselves. In FY 2000, the worldwide market for digital still cameras is projected to reach between 12 million and 13 million, which is twice that of the previous year.

Worldwide demand for digital cameras is expected to reach 10 million units in 2000, a 70% increase over the previous year. Other analysts say that total demand may go as high as 12 million units, when all the results are in. Higher demand can be attributed to three factors. These are the increasing number of PC and Internet users; improved digital camera technology; and the trend toward smaller and more lightweight digital cameras.
