Sharp Corp has started a restructuring of its projection business in an effort to capture a large share of the market in a span of three years. The initiative, which also includes the realignment of its distribution channels, began with the integration of the company's overseas marketing group under the LCD Digital Systems Div's Global Market Dept. Sharp's stategy, which take into consideration the various uses for projectors, emphasizes the development of specific products for markets outside Japan.

As projector demand soars, makers face parts shortages

Manufacturers of multimedia and data projectors are reportedly experiencing shortages in key parts due to the strong sales of their products. Global demand for projectors is expected to reach 1.1 to 1.2 million in 2000, 45 to 50% higher than in 1999, with demand in Japan amounting to 80,000 to 90,000 units. The popularity of small models is growing rapidly. Shipments of projectors with 0.7-in and 0.9-in elements are increasing by 50% annually.
