HMOs fleeing Medicaid as profits evaporate
Article Abstract:
The biggest health maintenance organizations (HMOs) in the US are leaving managed care programs for the poor and the elderly as their profits drop. Medicaid programs are the most affected, with managed care organizations such as Oxford Health Plans, Kaiser Permanente, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association have closed some of their Medicaid services in at least 12 states, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Florida. In Pittsburgh, PA, Health America and Aetna U.S. Healthcare left the Medicaid market in 1997.
