Think ahead
Article Abstract:
Many technology companies continue to ignore the importance of product life cycles despite the lessons of history. Some companies, such as Want in the late 1970s, failed to see the impact of new technology and went from a $3-billion company to a bankrupt company. Apple Computer is now facing a similar crisis with managing its growth in the face of the Windows 95 competing platform. Some companies such as Intel, though, not only understand the reality of product life cycles, but also control how long their product will last before it becomes replaced by newer technology. Microsoft is another example of aggressive product development as it anticipated the rise of integrated business suites and purchased Access and PowerPoint to add to Excel and Word; other software companies such as Borland and WordPerfect failed to react to changing market conditions.
