Cooperative research at MCC: a focus on semiconductor-related efforts
Article Abstract:
Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corp (MCC) research efforts include semiconductor packaging and interconnection and electronic applications of high-temperature superconductors. The research consortium was formed in 1982 to produce useful, timely and competitive research to speed the development and commercialization of microelectronic and computer technologies. Nineteen US aerospace, electronics, semiconductor and telecommunications companies now own MCC as well as participate in its projects, 95 percent of which are conducted at the consortium's Austin, TX facility. Major MCC research areas include advanced computing technology, software technology, computer-aided design of circuits and systems, and semiconductor technologies. Semiconductor packaging and interconnectivity and high-temperature superconductor applications are discussed at length.

Semiconductor research at Bellcore
Article Abstract:
Bell Communications Research Inc (Bellcore), the research and development (R&D) consortium wholly owned by the seven regional Bell operating companies, focuses on leading-edge R&D relating to the telecommunications operations of its parent firms, with Bellcore's Applied Research operation handling semiconductor R&D. Bellcore is prohibited from developing telecommunications products for manufacture by the court judgement breaking up of At&T in 1983. The 8,000 Bellcore personnel are divided into five major technical operations: Network Planning, Technology Systems, Software Technology and Systems, Technology Applications, and Applied Research. Applied Research's semiconductor research efforts are divided into ones supporting telecommunications networks and advanced technologies. Examples of the operation's R&D are described.
