Heterogeneous distributed database management: the HD-DBMS
Article Abstract:
Advances in computer networking, satellite communications, and the proliferation of different database management systems (DBMS) have led to heterogeneous distributed DBMS environments. The heterogeneity of DBMS - such as different data models, syntax, semantics, and controls - increases the challenges and problems related to achieving transparency. Ideally, any user in any mode of a network should have access to an integrated and tailored view of the system, even though data may reside in one single or many separated databases managed by several different DBMSs. The long-range UCLA HD-DBMS project is underway to achieve this ideal.

Distributed database design methodologies
Article Abstract:
Distributed databases are becoming more widespread, fueled by advances in technology and demand for system availability. Designers are faced with the challenge of distributing data and programs on different computers to achieve performance, reliability, and availability goals. Distributed design requires its own theory, design methodologies, and support tools. Top-down approaches (development from scratch) and bottom up approaches (integration and aggregation of existing databases) represent two polar approaches which designers may use interactively to achieve distributed database design.

Reliable distributed database management
Article Abstract:
Reliable database management systems (DBMS) should provide users with correct data when needed, regardless of hardware failures. The reliability may be had by distribution to help isolate potential failure nodes, and replication to make alternate nodes available. These distributed and replicated resources must be properly managed by the system. Algorithms and design techniques are available to aid in the modeling of the system and its management.
