Between the Alps and a hard place
Article Abstract:
A fifteen-year project has been undertaken for the modernization of the Swiss railway system, a part of which is the modernization of the world's longest tunnel through the Alps. This modernization process may bring benefit in the tourism industry and in trade of the country. Advanced curve geometry to the right-of-way, and lighter passenger cars with lower centers of gravity are used in the modernization process. The switching and the signaling equipment are also refined as a part of the project.

aluminium structural codes keep up with the rules on Europe
Article Abstract:
Structural codes for aluminium and its alloys are now based on limit state, rather than on elastic stress. The new code means that the engineer or designer must establish a limit state over which performance levels will be unacceptable. The code gives engineers a clear method of stress calculation, and other parts of the code cover welding and fatigue.
