A Rational Reconstruction of the MYCIN Consultation System
Article Abstract:
MYCIN is a well-known expert system used for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. A detailed analysis and a partial reconstruction of MYCIN's control structure is presented. Emphasis is placed on the production rules, goal-directed backward chaining of rules, parameters and context types employed. The data structures created during consultation and used for diagnoses are reviewed. The system's use of certainty factors to handle uncertain information is analyzed. The aim of the overall analysis is to aid development of theory in expert systems and assist those working on similar systems. Among the listings in the appendices is one of the main program.

Direct tests of the hypothesis that expectations are rational
Article Abstract:
US Commerce Department quarterly nominal sales forecasts for the periods 1961 to 1972 and 1961 to 1976 are compared with the rational expectations hypothesis to test for consistency. For the 1961-72 forecast, errors were uncorrelated, orthogonal to previous actual sales and uncorrelated to available macroeconomic data. The forecasts were generally consistent with the rational expectations hypothesis. However, the forecasts after 1972 showed autocorrelated errors which were correlated to available macroeconomic data.
