A model for the management of building evacuation
Article Abstract:
The process of emergency evacuation of large buildings has been modeled by computing the theoretically most efficient paths for occupants and then attempting to realise this recommendation in evacuation planning and management. A simulation approach is presented which reverses this sequence. The evacuation behavior of occupants is modeled to predict and analyze the choices that lead to serious bottlenecks and an improvement strategy is developed from these results. An explanation of the basis for the model is presented, followed by examination of results of applying the model to Pauls' evacuation data and to a university building with complex exit structures. Building clever
Article Abstract:
Research needs to be undertaken to assess the degree of control required by occupants living in houses fitted with intelligent management technology. Houses can be built which control heat, water and energy usage, reducing costs and maintaining a constant living environment, although users need to have a degree of self-control to feel the system is worth the investment. Intelligent commercial buildings need to be monitored after handing over to clients, to ensure systems are providing the necessary control required to meet lower costs and energy savings.
