As Research Teams Grow Older
Article Abstract:
An individual with a long-term job tenure goes through three stages: socialization, innovation and stabilization. As the individual becomes accustomed to his work, his work enthusiasm may diminish. A field study of research and development project teams at a large American corporation was conducted to see if there is less intense involvement in job demands with greater stability in project membership. Levels of communication at various stages of group longevity and the relationship between communication and job performance were studied. Both communication and performance were lower for groups in the long-tenured category. Groups with high levels of group longevity develop a pattern of increasing isolation, selective exposure and selective perception. Management can take steps to minimize the negative effects of extended longevity on project performance through systematic and creative use of staffing and career decisions.

Teams Which Excell
Article Abstract:
'High Performing System' (HPS) is a group of men, who utilize technology to perform some task with outstanding results. Peter Oaill, a behavioral scientist at George Washington Unversity, observed several HPSs. Then his observations were summarized into twenty-one organizational traits in four basic groups: behavior, system/environment relations and feelings. A group formed by the Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory to solve laser technology problems for the U.S. Air Force Weapons Laboratory was used as an an example of an HPS. The results of the study indicate that two conditions have to be present for an HPS to occur: people must be creative and competent, and the environment must allow freedom of operation.

How to get nonbelievers to participate in teams
Article Abstract:
The team leaders in industry need to resolve the problems of some associates' refusal to participate in team activities for higher performance. The leader's ability to remove obstacles, coach, counsel, and resolve conflicts, integrates people into teams. The combination of the talents, experiences, and skills of each individual can contribute to a team's performance. The value of team involvement should be established. While emphasizing the strengths, the weaknesses should be viewed as development opportunities.
