Blinkered by visions of tradition
Article Abstract:
The design of modern houses in the UK is strongly dominated by the 'Arts and Crafts' tradition, which emphasised and revered local, traditional and vernacular elements. Housebuilders are generally unable to afford traditional local materials, but make some effort to add some traditional features in modern materials. This approach is preventing the development of a clear vision of the future of housing in the UK. This contrasts strongly with the Netherlands, for example, where designers are willing to be innovative.

Forward visions
Article Abstract:
Town planners should be given more encouragement to think about the future consequences of their actions and ideas. Although some argue that pressure of work precludes planners from being visionaries, it is essential that they regard their work as part of a future development framework. WIth a little encouragement, town planners can reawaken their visionary ideals, which could one day become part of the development structure.
