Bringing it all back home
Article Abstract:
The UK government estimates that the number of households will increase by 1 million between 1995 and 2011, and a further 4.4 million households could be added by 2016. The UK House Builders Federation argues that local government has imposed too much constraint on building homes. A program for a new town is proposed by the Town and Country Planning Association, though this idea is opposed by the Council for the Preservation of Rural England. There is also a debate as to how accurate forecasts for household growth are.

Rural rethink
Article Abstract:
Good design of developments in UK villages could help resolve other issues of a social and economic nature. Much development in the 50 years to 1995 has been of poor quality and this has led to restraints which in turn have hindered finding solutions to rural problems such as lack of housing. The special character of each individual village should be taken into account when developments are proposed, and this applies to non-residential buildings as well as housing.
