CASE's missing elements: key functions must be added to computer-aided software engineering tools, and thorough training is needed in their use
Article Abstract:
Computer-aided software engineering (CASE) is attractive because the automation effort helps to reduce the cost of software development by minimizing the the labor content of software. Ultimately CASE tools want to improve software reliability and quality, as well. However, to truly benefit from CASE tools, firms using the tools will need to provide preparation and training. Important functions need to be added to the tools including enhancing the ability of CASE tools to better manage paperwork generated by software development projects. In addition, CASE tools would benefit from better communication and coordination features. CASE users and experts point to the fact that extensive training is required to truly benefit from CASE tools. A survey reveals that failure rates for CASE tools are about 50 percent when adequate training is not provided.
