Chem-transports get smoother

Article Abstract:

The transport of chemicals by rail in Europe received a boost from an agreement forged in Feb 2000, between the Paris, France-based International Union of Railways and the Brussels, Belgium-based European Chemical Industry Council. Under the Safety and Quality Assessment System, which took three years to negotiate, a common safety management standard will be implemented across the European continent. This should result in speedier and more safe handling of chemicals shipped by rail.

Proposed European energy taxes meet resistance

Article Abstract:

Chemical process industries (CPI) in France and the UK have protested proposed energy taxes that could adversely affect their global competitiveness when they go into effect in 2001. Many CPI companies complain that the proposed tariffs on energy use to curb greenhouse emissions would unfairly impact their operations. The French and UK governments have independently discussed a number of revisions to the proposed tax rates in response to the concerns of these companies.

Biocides head for a shakeout

Article Abstract:

Biocide firms are heading for a tough challenge ahead with the approval of the European Biocidal Products Directive in Apr 1999. The regulation, which will become law by 2001, will reduce the number of active biocide ingredients used in various products such as paints, wood, paper and leather. In addition, the directives are also limiting the development of new active ingredients.
