Comparing the importance of variation and mean of a distribution
Article Abstract:
An industrial case study gives a valuable insight into issues relating to comparing the importance of variation and mean of a distribution. The company in question purchased a second, smaller firm. It then realized that it had two different methods for securing a pulley, fan or gear onto a steel hub. Technicians decided to undertake capability studies on both processes, including the calculation of the process index. This work involved constructing an individuals chart to check the stability of the centre of the process and a moving range chart to check the stability of the variation of the process.

The control chart dilemma
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers can effectively apply statistical process control by selecting the right kind of control chart. Factors to consider when selecting control charts include the number of parameters and characteristics to be evaluated in a single chart, the subgroup size and whether different standard deviations will be monitored on the same chart. The use of group target X and R charts is discussed.
