Developing technical managers - first you need a competency model
Article Abstract:
A blueprint for potential managers from among the technical staff was developed after conducting interviews with 17 technical managers who were considered effective leaders by their respective companies. The interviews produced a list of characteristics that are deemed essential for future technical managers. These include knowledge of leadership role in the company, a number of vital accomplishments, competence in work activities, the necessary skills and personal attributes such as leadership, desire to succeed, creativity and honesty.

Resurging Latin America presents global technology managers with new markets and venture opportunities
Article Abstract:
A two-year research led by Worcester Polytechnic Institute and supported by the US Dept of Education's Business and International Education Program reveals that technology-based opportunities in Latin America are growing. Such can be attributed to major improvement in the economic fundamentals of the region. A dramatic decline in inflation has also allowed the spirit of technological innovation to flourish. The older family-owned business economy of the region is being replaced by joint ventures and strategic business alliances.

Xerox R&D managers learn to build business value into their products
Article Abstract:
Xerox aims to cultivate the entrepreneurial abilities of their R&D managers through its Business Models Workshops. Administered by the Harvard Business School, the three-year project has educated its research managers on such topics as business strategy, finance, operations, logistics, marketing and planning new products and business opportunities. The sessions have already benefited the company even before the last workshop was held. A still unannounced project was implemented under the guidance of the workshops.
