When a planner's life can be a beach: coastal management plans are riding on a wave at the moment
Article Abstract:
Shoreline management plans (SMPs) are being prepared for many stretches of coastline since the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food announced that funding for coast protection schemes would depend on each authority having a strategic plan for coastal defence in place. The government has also established its Coastal Forum which could either complement or clash with other policy documents, such as local plans and management plans.

Entering the coastal zone: authorities in the coastal zone are realising the importance of adopting a wider view on their shoreline responsibilities
Article Abstract:
The government first produced policy guidelines relating to the whole coastline in 1992 and now policy is being prepared at a regional level by some regional organisations linked to local planning authorities. Many English structure plans have a separate section for coastal issues allowing an integrated approach to the land, the intertidal zone and the sea.
