Fixed wireless routes for Internet access
Article Abstract:
Fixed wireless technology can provide Internet access when existing wiring cannot, and it is more reliable than mobile cellular telephone networks while providing sufficient bandwidth to carry television signals, high-speed data and voice telephony. Wireless systems operate in frequency bands between 2.4 and 38 GHz, are easy to design and less expensive to install and operate than wireline technologies. They are well suited to developing countries with little telephone infrastructure, and they can be expanded incrementally. Companies such as WinStar Communications and Teligent offer fixed wireless services in the US and other developed countries, and their links are being used increasingly for broadband services, particularly in remote areas of the US where fast wireline Internet access is impractical. The FCC has reserved 15 frequency bands for commercial fixed wireless service: the 2.4-to-2.4835-GHz band, which is called the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band, is popular with operators because it is unlicensed and requires no fees, and equipment vendors like it because it is available internationally.

The Advanced Information Technology (AIT) consortium, which consists of research organizations, information-technology suppliers, manufacturing companies, universities and suppliers of components, was created in Europe to establish an interoperable-tool system that integrates computer-aided manufacturing and design software for the production and designing of aircraft and cars. The AIT consortium also created a reference model for information technology, which demonstrates how an ideal interoperable-tool system operates. The platform for integration offers users different capabilities, such as engineering and design elementary services, systems management, access control, naming, conversion and manufacturing.

Europe's future mobile telephony system
Article Abstract:
The mobile-telephony sector of Europe sees the emergence of development initiatives for a new generation of wireless-communications systems, such as the International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) 2000 and the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), that exhibit a potential for paving the way for universal roaming and for handling both voice and data. Geneva, Switz's International Telecommunication Union is developing the IMT 2000, a new range of mobile-communication systems that offer capabilities such as worldwide roaming. Sophia Antipolis, France's European Telecommunications Standards Institute, on the other hand, is having the UMTS formulated in its framework.
