Why Silvertown is a sterling success
Article Abstract:
The West Silvertown Urban Village development, situated between the Royal Victoria Dock and North Woolwich Road in London, England, will serve to regenerate around 11.3ha of formerly derelict land. The scheme will eventually have a combined working and residential population of up to 5,000 people, with some new occupants now already moving in. The designers have taken care to use a clear and simple primary and secondary street pattern which will ensure ease of access to all parts of the site. Provision has also been made for various types of pedestrian route.

Beware the perils of the brownfield path
Article Abstract:
The UK government's plan to build at least 60% of the planned extra 4.4 million homes on urban brownfield sites initially appears attractive, especially as it will protect valuable rural land. However, it must be realised that growing social polarisation could emerge if people are forced to live in urban areas and are denied access to the attractions of small towns and villages. Cities may become inhabited simply be people who cannot afford to live elsewhere, and this will not promote regeneration.

Come the revolution: planners must recognise the implications of the IT revolution on urban areas if they are not to be left to pick up the pieces at a later date
Article Abstract:
Professor David Chiddick, pro-vice chancellor at De Montfort University, Leicester, believes that the information technology revolution will have serious implications for planers. He feels that a new approach to planning and development is need, with new ideas and approaches to work and living space. A framework in which key issues are identified is needed and ultimately he favours multi purpose spaces, where work, living, study and play can simultaneously take place.
