Integrating design and production: a case study of the naval submarine program
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the shipbuilding program of the US Navy. The study focuses on the integration of design and manufacturing elements in the construction of submarines. Results show that a cooperative program between the state and industry is in place, with benefits accruing to both parties while minimizing taxpayer outlay for such manufacturing operations. In addition, improvements in shipbuilding technology are considered viable for developing better programs for boat design.

Corporate strategy and culture in a conversion process: adjustment in defence industry
Article Abstract:
The substantial decline in demand for military defense products and related R&D has made defense companies consider a transfer of released resources to civilian use. This adjustment process, also called conversion, integrates production variable changes and must not be confused with diversification. The market changes in the industry should spur defense firm managers to adapt new corporate strategies that shift their dependence away from military operations.
