Mesoporous ceramic sucks up metals from solutions
Article Abstract:
Mobil Technology Co. has come up with a method that is used to create mesoporous ceramic. The ceramic is made in a 5- to 15-micrometer-diameter grains, which can then be agglomerated into beads of as big as 0.5-mm diameter. Small ceramic beads, which were chemically modified to find specific metals from contaminated solutions, have been created at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA. The silica beads have a surface area of 1,000 sq m/g, which enables them to gather, for instance, around 600 mg of mercury per gram of ceramic, according to a staff member. This is higher in contrast with ceramic made with sol-gel methods, which can accumulate only around 20 mg/g.

Regenerative turbine pumps: unsung heroes for volatile fluids
Article Abstract:
Regenerative turbine pumps, an impeller pump is used by the chemical process industry for volatile fluids. Volatile fluids may cause cavitation that damages pumps when it vaporizes during pumping. Regenerative turbine ;pumps are able to withstand cavitation in the inlet fluid. It also continues to pump volatile liquids at the specified flowrate even when its receiving element has adjusting pressure problems. Centrifugal pumps may completely break down when cavitation and pressure problems occur.

Providing solutions to separation problems
Article Abstract:
Artisan Indusries Inc of Waltham, MA, has introduced new solutions to separation problems which involve heat sensitive, viscous, fouling and difficult-to-separate materials. One is the Rototherm Thin Film Processor whichb can evaporate highly viscous materials to more than 99% in a single pass without burn-ons. The company also launched its Continuous Evaporator/Stripper which can strip volatile impurities from heat sensitive materials to low parts-per-million levels.
