New peripherals increase options
Article Abstract:
The distinction between workstations and personal computers is becoming less obvious. High-end PCs offer at least as much computing power as low-end workstations, while workstations are beginning to intrude into the market previously reserved for microcomputers. This trend has led to a number of developments with regard peripheral equipment. In the first place, workstation and PC vendors can now design peripherals with either platform in mind. Increased connectivity options are now available as the result of increased hardware bus competition. Also, new storage techniques have led to greater use of visualization methodologies and increased flexibility. Additionally, new technologies designed for one application are being used to solve varied problems. Detailed is an overview of the peripherals market and a buyer's guide to available products.

Pedal power: bicycle use is one way to break out of car-dependency, and there are many moves to increase its popularity
Article Abstract:
Cycle ownership in the UK is at similar levels to that of private cars, however usage has fallen, unlike the remainder of northern Europe where usage is growing. The bicycle was given a strategic role by continental planners and this has led to widespread environmental improvement. The National Cycling Strategy has been launched in the UK, with the aim of doubling cycle use by 2002. This will not be easy although the UK has the advantage that the majority of the population live in compact urban areas. Local authorities now have an opportunity to reivew their strategies for transport and access issues and plan for different traffic mixes.
