Oil-shale partners show confidence in a turbulent oil market
Article Abstract:
The Stuart Oil Shale Project, a joint venture, is pursuing plans to commercialize an oil shale technology in Gladstone, Queensland, in Australia, with a 4,500-bbl/d pilot facility slated for completion in the second quarter of 1999. The effort comes at a time when prices of oil are depressed and there is a surplus of the product. Phase two calls for a 15,000-bbl/d factory, while full-scale commercial operation, at a total capacity of 85,000 bbl/d, is planned for phase three. The joint venture is composed of Central Pacific Minerals N.L. and Southern Pacific Petroleum N.L., both based in Brisbane, Queensland, and Calgary, Alberta-based Suncor Energy Inc.

Is manufacturing growing or slowing?
Article Abstract:
Economists and manufacturers offer differing views regarding the rate of growth of the manufacturing industry in the light of the Asian financial crisis. According to the Educational Society for Resource Management (APICS) index for November 1997, the industry's growth is sluggish at below 50. In contrast to the forecast by APICS of 1.5% to 2% growth rate for the first six months of 1998, economists predict a growth rate falling between 2% to 2.5%. On the other hand, manufacturers are expecting a better business performance in 1998 than in 1997.
