Pioneers on the urban frontier
Article Abstract:
A new housing development in the Germany city of Kiel illustrates the benefits of sustainable development. A housing cooperative has built 21 timber-framed, grass roofed dwellings, ranging in size from 98 sq mt to 180 sq mt, each provided with hot water, heat and electricity by a centrally-operated combined heat and power unit. Waste disposal is carried out on site. There is a communal space, including gardens and a community house which contains a kindergarten, but no parking spaces are provided on site. The aim of the development is to balance sustainable development with acceptable living standards.

Rural retreats for a sustainable lifestyle: experimental but sustainable rural development projects are permitted elsewhere in Europe and will a little imagination they could happen here
Article Abstract:
Individuals and groups wanting to set up sustainable projects often face planning problems, as much rural development is frowned upon. The new PPG7 draft sees sustainable development as a cornerstone of rural planning, but makes no definition of a sustainable project. There needs to be clearer guidance about assessing the sustainability of a project, and a legal agreement with developers is needed to ensure that a project remains sustainable.
