Propane-air torch challenges oxyacetylene
Article Abstract:
Drax Torches Ltd. said there is a new propane air-torch that could substitute for oxyacetylene and oxypropane in performing metal cutting and brazing functions. The device has a preheating mechanism that ensures concentrated flame is provided to a small section of the workpiece. The propane air-torch is available at 5% those of acetylene, safe to keep and use. Drax's Neil Downie said the propane-air blowtorch commonly used has a flame of close to 2,000 degree Centigrade but this cannot melt steel. He said the new torch overcomes this limitation because it has two burners.

Running surveillance on canned-motor pumps
Article Abstract:
KSB AG has integrated a real-time, diagnostic, monitory system for its line of canned-motor pumps. The Hyacontrol and Hyalog systems were included to measure wear of radial and axial bearings. The new designs were adapted since it was found out that most pump failures are linked to bearing failure. Dennis Fegan, director of sales and marketing for Houston, TX-based Teikoku USA Inc., noted over 90% of these failures. Canned-motor pumps, a sealless type of centrifugal pump, are usually utilized to lessen potential leakage of pumped fluids.

The fallout at British Nuclear Fuels
Article Abstract:
British Nuclear Fuels (BNF) remains under fire after admitting in Sep 1999 that quality-control data for a shipment of mixed oxide (MOX) nuclear fuel had been falsified. Its CEO has been fired while privatization plans have been shelved in the meantime. Moreover, important customers such as Germany and Japan have stopped buying MOX from BNF. The UK Nuclear Installations Inspectorate has also shut down its MOX facility in Sellafield, pending the implementation of 15 remedial measures.
