Roadside service areas every 15 miles spell doom for the Scottish village shop
Article Abstract:
Scottish roads will become safer if roadside service areas are built every 15 miles on trunk roads and motorways, according to George Kynoch, Scottish Office minister for local government and planning. This view is accepted by planners, but they point out that building many new service areas will have a very negative impact on shops in villages and by-pass communities. Drivers would be able to purchase petrol and food without having to leave main roads, thus reducing trade for small local shops.

Rural areas development must not be restricted
Article Abstract:
Small firms must be allowed to establish a presence in rural areas if rural economies are to survive, according to a report from the Rural Development Commission. It is now time to build on the general health of the rural economy, ensuring that growth spreads to peripheral rural areas and those where there are still economic problems. All planning policies must be designed to safeguard the needs of rural areas.

Out with the old, in with the new?: Edinburgh's policy on nursing homes is that 'as long as they are compatible within residential areas' there will be no adverse effects on amenity
Article Abstract:
Edinburgh's elderly population is expected to fall to the year 2001, contrary to the national trend towards a growing elderly population. A shortfall in hospital accommodation is expected to be met by the private nursing home sector, and new proposals call for larger homes, which has led to concerns about their institutional nature.
