Smoothing out compressor control
Article Abstract:
The control system for two reciprocating compressors that were not functioning properly at the Deer Island Treatment Plant in Boston, MA, is presented as a case study. Changes to the control system include the relocation of the transmitter and the replacement of the pneumatic positioner, volume booster and current-to-pressure converter, with a smart digital-positioner incorporating the characterizer.

New industrial screw compressor runs on water: the world's first water-lubricated compressor makes oil-free factories a real possibility. It owes its development to a new super-tough plastic used for the principle component, the rotor set
Article Abstract:
A new single stage rotary screw compressor uses water, rather than oil, as the single cooling, lubricating and sealing medium. The new screw rotor materials is based on ceramic particulated suspended in a thermoset polymer matrix. It has been developed by engineers at Compair and Grassair, of Holland, and applications include environments that require oil free air such as hospitals.

Exothermic joining spins into view: parts can now be clad or joined faster and more effeciently than even before
Article Abstract:
A process of exothermic welding has been developed and patented at The Welding Insititute (TWI). The process is combined with centrifugal casting used to compress the exothermic powder, which, when ignited, coats or welds the components. It can be used to apply coatings to pipes, brake drums and bearing rings including the rings of aerospace turbine blades.
