Choosing the right reactor: reaction engineering, part 2
Article Abstract:
Reaction kinetics are among the major considerations in the selection of commercial reactors, whether batch, plug-flow or backmix. While general reactions in these different types of reactors are important, heterogeneous reactions that occur in more than one phase, that is, the solid, liquid or gas phases, are growing in significance not only because of the large number of relatively new products resulting from them but also because of the new, heterogeneous, phase-transfer catalysts for existing processes.

Union Carbide takes its EPDM facility on-line
Article Abstract:
Union Carbide Corp has restarted its ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) plant in Seadrift, TX, in Dec 1998. The gas-phase facility was closed in Nov 1997 to resolve downstream processing and handling difficulties. The process being used was adapted from its Unipol polyethylene and propylene low-pressure, gas-phase technology. It employs carbon black as a fluidizing and partitioning agent to produce a granular EPDM product called ElastoFlo.
