Using the IRI/CIMS R&D Database
Article Abstract:
Data from the IRI/CIMS R&D Database show that there is a measurable trend toward decentralization of R&D. This is evident in the database's Management Practices Survey, which indicates a shift in the commitment of resources from corporate laboratories to business segment laboratories. Another development that provides evidence of a trend toward R&D decentralization is the increase in influence of business segment management on R&D efforts. Furthermore, R&D program funding and activities are being reallocated from basic, longer-term, high-risk research to product and process development.
