Banking on branching out with IT
Article Abstract:
The revolution in the banking industry is changing the face of many city and town centres. The introduction of new technology and cashpoint machines have made it almost unnecessary for customers to visit banks. A study into bank branch restructuring in Scotland shows that some 40% of the four main clearing banks' retail outlets have closed in Edinburgh, mainly because of over-concentration. Former bank buildings in the city have attracted other kinds of uses, including financial companies and restaurants, although some have remained empty for long periods.

Wasteland to wetlands: a wetlands reserve in central London is being developed thanks to a rare harmony of housing, ecology and a remarkable piece of planning
Article Abstract:
Barn Elms in Barnes, south west London is to be transformed into a wetlands reserve by 1998. The area will include a visitors' centre, pathways, brdiges and will offer exhibition tours. The site previously consisted of redundant reservoirs and its transformation is the result of an enabling development, which is a rarely used principal of town and country planning law. The north of the site is being developed for housing to help fund the wetlands projects.
