How TQM can work in education

Article Abstract:

The Conroe Independent School District, Texas, has adopted total quality management (TQM) as a part of its overall strategic planning. TQM experts from education and business address the strategic planning task force to make sure they understand the concept of TQM and its application in the field of education. This is followed by developing an implementation plan consisting of four phases of commitment, education and training, application and practice, and standardization and recognition. Lessons and advice for future application are given.

TQM in the R&D function

Article Abstract:

The research and development (R&D) groups adopt a shallow approach to total quality management (TQM). Application of TQM requires a customer-supplier chain and a process management model. It requires a good working relationship between all the departments and improvement in the people-oriented approach using group dynamics. It is reported as more important to the research and development community. TQM with better communication can create strong relationships with other functional groups.

Don't count TQM out

Article Abstract:

A growing number of business experts are criticizing total quality management (TQM) for failing to produce the anticipated financial returns. However, criticism of TQM is usually based on managers' perceptions, rather than on objective data. New research indicates that it may take some time for the benefits of TQM to become apparent. TQM improves performance in the long term, and managers must therefore be patient, resisting the temptation to abandon TQM initiatives prematurely.
