Decomposition dynamics in mixed-species leaf litter

Article Abstract:

The research is done on the different species of leaves, decaying in mixtures, to find their patterns of mass loss, change in nutrient concentration, and decomposer abundance and activity. The patterns emerging from the mixed-litter decomposition have implications for relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function and for potential mechanisms through which invasive plant species could alter carbon and nutrient dynamics in ecosystems.

Can the growth-differentiation balance hypothesis be tested rigorously?

Article Abstract:

Rigorously testing the primary derivative hypotheses would require considerable methodological effort. The growth-differentiation balance (GDB) hypothesis (as elaborated by Herms and Mattson) provides a framework for examining the impact of a resource gradient on the constant tradeoff between growth and differentiation in cells and tissues of plants, in particular with the consequences for plant defense.

A powdery mildew infection on a shared host plant affects that dynamics of the Glanville fritillary butterfly populations

Article Abstract:

The effects of fungal infecting by Podosphaera plantaginis, a powdery mildew, of a shared host plant, Plantago lanceolata, on the larvae of the butterfly Melitaea cinxia. Larval responses were assessed in a no-choice feeding assay involving infected and healthy leaves.
