The perils of plastic
Article Abstract:
Plastics that are labeled 'degradable' or 'recyclable' are still a menace to the environment. Biodegradable plastics are either made using cornstarch or break down in the presence of sunlight. However, the degradation process does not go far enough. Recyclable plastics, on the other hand, are not like recyclable glass or aluminum because a small proportion of the plastic is actually recycled. A truly biodegradable polymer, called Biofan, is now out in the market but its use is very limited.

Under the microscope: The use of 'black box' techniques carrier risks
Article Abstract:
Researchers tend to make some substantial errors while using increasingly sophisticated techniques for their modern biology experiments. The collaboration of specialists should be sought early during experimental design so that biologists can have a hands-on experience for operating the instrument, thereby reducing the risk of errors.

Patent greed
Article Abstract:
Laws granting plant breeders broad rights to patent products they extract from the biologically diverse Southern Hemisphere are unfair to farmers. The patenting of Cowpea Trypsin Inhibitor, which uncompensated West African farmers helped develop, shows how private interests exploit biodiversity.
