US Peace Corps volunteers going to former Soviet republics
Article Abstract:
The Commonwealth of Independent States will now be welcoming US Peace Corps volunteers into their territories. Around 600 volunteers, majority of which are from the business sector, are preparing to leave and will be acting as business consultants to the former Soviet republics. They will be working independently and will be getting a basic living allowance plus housing and health benefits. Their task consists of handling English classes and instructing businessmen on free enterprise. The program will receive new funding and will not cut down funds intended for Third World countries.

US wine-growers going organic
Article Abstract:
At least 60 US wineries are giving up pesticides and fertilizer in favor of organic farming techniques. They are finding that they can remain competitive and produce better wine. Fetzer, Gallo, Sutter Home and Buena Vista are among the larger wineries exploring organic techniques. Organic production costs about 25% more for the first two years but then costs stabilize or decline in some cases. Production increases, reduced potential for worker injury and immunity from government bans for toxic substance content are other advantages.

Health effects of toxic organic substances from coal: Toward "Panendemic" nephropathy
Article Abstract:
The study report linking Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) to the leaching of toxic organic compounds from low rank (lignite) pliocene coal deposits into water supplies (well and spring water) of the rural villages where the disease occurs is presented.
