What's new under the sun
Article Abstract:
Solar energy systems, thermal and photovoltaic (PV), have reached a point where they can begin to compete with fossil fuels. Ongoing research from the 1970s has developed thermal systems such as flat-plate collectors, evacuated tube collectors and solar pond collectors. PV systems use a semiconductor that converts light to electricity with efficiency ranging from 11% to 31% depending on the solar cells used. The price for PV generated electricity has dropped from $155 per peak watt in 1970, to $4 per peak watt in 1992.

The Alessi housewares company's design philosophy is different from that in most companies, according to CEO Alberto Alessi. He explained that, for Alessi, design is an artistic, poetic discipline that influences the company's management and overall philosophy. The company's catalogs, which bear the Alessi, Officini Alessi, Tendentse and Twergi brand names, offer about 2,000 products. About 10 people are responsible for the design of most of those products.
