Dumping ground

Article Abstract:

US steel producers are complaining about the alleged dumping of cheap steel by their foreign competitors. While supply has been higher than demand even before the Asian financial contagion, the crisis has worsened the situation. With demand growth in their own countries coming to a halt, east Asian producers are shipping their products to North America, which apart from having the healthiest economies in the world is arguably the freest trading.

Outbound shipments run aground

Article Abstract:

Steel and ferrous scrap exports dramatically dropped during 1998, especially in the latter part of the year. Steel Recycling Institute president William M. Heenan Jr. said exports are projected to be down 25% over the previous year, most of the decline happening over the last five months. Low demand from Asian countries such as South Korea and India that were hardest hit by the regional financial crisis was one major reason for the decline.
