Analyzing contaminants in the organic waste stream
Article Abstract:
A study initiated in 1991 by the Washington State Department of Agriculture aimed to check if the degrees of contamination in composed animal manure and seafood processing waste were environmentally hazardous. It revealed that composts from clean foodstocks are relatively free of dangerous contaminants. The final compost product of compost manufacturers would be clean if natural nonindustralized foodstocks were used, and equipment leakage of diesel or oil was prevented.

Plastics and compost end use
Article Abstract:
Plastics in compost materials have the potential to bring down a composting plant. This problem is very difficult to deal with because many composting facilities accept materials placed in plastic bags. Among the many difficulties encountered with plastics in the compost material are poor quality compost, unsightly pieces of plastics and rejected products that end up in landfills. One potential solution to this problem is the use of biodegradable containers.

New Zealand city confronts contamination
Article Abstract:
An overview is presented on the management strategies used by the City Council of Christchurch, New Zealand, to control damages caused by clopyralid-contaminated compost. These included discussions with herbicide manufacturers about avoiding the use of clopyralid in their products, and the development of a program to divert clopyralid-contaminated yard waste from municipal recycling facilities.
