Bulky waste collection: evolution of French dropoff centers
Article Abstract:
French local communities have established dropoff centers for bulky wastes to minimize dumping into landfill sites. Known locally as "dechetteries", these centers will receive household and commercial waste which will then be sent off to reclamation areas. French dechetteries have increased from two in 1981 to 425 in 1991 and have accepted a variety of materials ranging from thick iron to old furniture. Yard waste is shred and composted by the Vegeterre process which was developed by the French Environment and Energy Control Agency.

Digging into the landfill
Article Abstract:
One Florida county has an ongoing landfill mining project, and another is considering such a project. Collier County, needing a source of landfill cover material, began mining an outdated landfill cell in 1987. The cell's material is screened, and about 60% of the screened material is suitable for use as cover material. Most of the remaining material is placed in a newer lined cell. Alachua County is considering building a 'wet cell' that would be designed to facilitate mining.

Using yard trimmings as daily landfill cover
Article Abstract:
Waste haulers and landfill operators are in favor of pursuing with California's recycling diversion credit regulations for using green materials as alternative daily cover on landfills. Organizations such as the California Organics Recycling Council are opposed to the use of organic landfill covers, citing possible adverse effects such as methane production and landfill fires as a consequence to using volatile green materials.
