Composter teams up with lettuce grower
Article Abstract:
Spreckels, CA-based Cranford Inc composts yard trimmings, horse and cow manure, straw and lettuce culls which it supplies to lettuce grower Tanimura and Antle Inc and local growers in Salinas Valley. Cranford prefers to compost fresh greens, brush and leaves since it is easier to breakdown and adds more nutrient value to the soil. The lettuce culls come from Tanimura while yard trimmings are received from haulers. The resulting compost is supplied to Tanimura and the rest is sold to fruit and vegetable growers, vineyards and orchards in the area.

Measuring process parameters at an enclosed composting facility
Article Abstract:
Green Lane Environmental Group Ltd. in Lambeth, ON, has been able to assess the reliability of the methods it uses for on-site testing at its composting facility through a research project undertaken with the University of Western Ontario and the University of Guelph. It was found that interlaboratory results between the company's on-site laboratory and the University of Western Ontario's Pedology Lab were generally similar. This indicates that the basic testing methods used at the composting facility can be deemed to be reliable.
