Materials recovery facilities: a 1996 update

Article Abstract:

A mid-1996 update of materials recovery facilities shows that there is a drop in the prices of many recyclable materials, specially OCC, OMG, ONP and metals. The non-availability of revenues from their sales has led to financial pressures and decrease in construction of such facilities. Two-thirds of the 37 new projects are already operational and 12 are in various stages of construction. The update shows a decrease in privately owned projects from 69% to 56% and increase in publicly owned projects from 16% to 26%, which means that recyclable processing has become less profitable.
