Estimating the social value of geologic map information: a regulatory application
Article Abstract:
A procedure has been developed for appraising the economic value of applying geological map information to site a waste disposal facility. The assessment encompasses the assumption that the geological history of an area may be changed by society, a phenomenon which has substantial regulatory importance due to its potential to affect the occurrence and impact of environmental hazards. The net benefits from the use of an improved geologic map information has been interpreted as the benefits for the new geologic map information minus the cost of producing such a map. This computation would result in a net benefit of about $0.34 million in the case of the use of a reference 1:100,000 scale Loudoun Country, VA, geologic map.

Heterogeneity, irreversible production choices, and efficiency in emission permit markets
Article Abstract:
Market-based environmental regulations based on the tradable discharge permit program provided by the Clean Air Act is examined focusing on issues related to firm technological heterogeneity and irreversible investment on operation of permit market. Results indicate that trade volume is implicated by price variability. Thus, reducing price variability should be the emphasis of efforts in increasing market activity.
