Expanding septage treatment capacity on Cape Cod
Article Abstract:
Two septage treatment facilities will expand the sewage treatment capabilities of Cape Cod, MA, following the state's decision to close unlined septic facilities in the area. One of the sewage treatment plants, Tri-Town Septage Treatment Facility in Orleans, MA, has been operating since 1990 and has a capacity to treat 45,000 gallons of septage daily. The other facility, set to open in the summer of 1992, is jointly owned by Yarmouth and Dennis, MA. The Yarmouth facility can handle up to 22 million gallons of sewage annually. The sewage treatment technology employed by each facility is discussed.

Expanding on-farm composting
Article Abstract:
The On-Farm Composting Project in Massachusetts is finding ways to connect farmers, haulers and commercial food residuals generators. The project aims to develop an infrastructure for the diversion of food residuals and quality compost production. Specifically, the project's objective is to divert an average of 170 tons/week of commercial organics to farms by mid-1999. The state's regulatory and policy environment is also an essential factor for the success of the project.
