Export markets perking up
Article Abstract:
Many fiber-poor Asian economies are buying increasing amounts of recovered fiber as depressed business conditions that began in the early 1990s appear to be abating. With the US paper market maintaining its strength and business conditions in more Asian countries beginning to improve, some paper stock dealers are expressing concern over what the implications for the US paper stock market could be. Since exports have traditionally been a major end market for recovered fiber, the strengthening of economies in Asia and Latin America could signal a return to greatness for these areas in 2000.

Article Abstract:
Russia is selling large volumes of scrap metal to the west from dismantled, obsolete buildings and complexes dating to the Soviet era to generate income. According to Schnitzer Steel Products Inc Executive VP Gary Schnitzer, Russia exported roughly 9 million tons of ferrous scrap to the US and is expected to export another 5 million tons in 1999. US Ferrous Trading Inc Pres Detlef Mueller predicts that Russian scrap exporters will continue to ship from Ukrainian and Finnish ports to keep material moving out of Russia.
