The many routes to recycling wood
Article Abstract:
Wood currently makes up 30% or 750,000 tons of C&D waste in North Carolina, however, only 35,000 is being recovered. The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is currently investigating possibilities of boosting wood recovery. Pheonix Recycling of Charlotte already processes C&D wood residuals into wood chips; while R24 Lumber of Charlotte was set up in January 1999 to produce wall studs from scrap lummber from construction sites.

Chipping at the curb
Article Abstract:
Curbside chipping services are available in municipalities in Iowa and Washington State, to manage tree trimmings. Such programs are becoming popular and in Lisbon a curbside chipping service is provided to the 550 households in the town. In neighboring Mount Vernon around 400 households take part in the program and costs are built into a disposal pick up fee. The chips are used as mulches, or as a source of carbon for home composting.
