In the spotlight
Article Abstract:
Industry consolidation, the Internet and the role of electronic commerce in scrap trading were the most-talked about topics during the 2000 Annual Convention of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. Delegates were unanimous in saying that industry consolidation would continue but were divided as to how electronic commerce would change the way ferrous scrap dealers would do business. On the other hand, participants offered varying degrees of pricing stablity for ferrous scrap.

Lingering doubts
Article Abstract:
Temporary plant shutdowns by US automakers are expected to have short-term and medium-term effects on the US ferrous scrap market. For instance, General Motors (GM) idle 14 of its 29 North American plants due to slumping vehicle sales. GM has a 100-day inventory of vehicle models, higher than the 60-day industry standard. Some of the to-be idled plants are significant generators of scrap, but the reduction in metal scrap would indicate that an economic slowdown is underway.
